Originally settled in 1800 then, founded in 1836, the town of Whitby, Ontario was named after the costal town of Whitby located in North East (Yorkshire) England. Whitby follows the naming trend of many towns in the Durham area, most likely due to the fact that the original surveyor was from northern England.
The Town of Whitby, Ontario has a current population of over 111,000 people and growing. The expansion continues both in the residential areas; with steady new home construction and, in industry; with major companies such as Atlantic Packaging, Durham College, Lakeridge Health, Johnson Controls, Ameristeel, McGraw Hill Ryerson, Lear Corporation and Patheon Pharmaceutical within its boundaries.

Whitby has approximately 29 public schools and 12 catholic schools; some of which include: Fallingbrook P.S., Whitby Shores P.S., St. Leo C.S., Blair Ridge P.S., Sinclair S.S., All Saints C.S.S, Anderson C.V.I, and the list goes on. Whitby also houses the renowned Trafalgar Castle School, originally built in 1859, then founded in 1874 as a private school for girls and still running today. The Elizabethan style architecture and picturesque grounds is popular with bridal parties looking to have a unique location and timeless photos of their big day.
